A Samui Experience at Baan BoranOrgasmic Restaurant, Koh Samui
Orgasmic Restaurant, Koh Samui

With the word 'orgasmic' in the title of a restaurant, you'd expect things there to be pretty special. And, at Orgasmic Bar & Beach Restaurant, you'd be dead right!

First of all, it has one of the best locations for a restaurant on the island. It's on a sunset-facing undeveloped beach, and is a snapshot in time of what Samui used to be like in the old days. And it's conveniently located, too. As you're coming from Fisherman's Village in Bophut, it's at the far end of the cove (just past My Friend Bungalows) before the road bends right towards Ban Rak (Big Buddha Beach). And if you're coming from the opposite direction, it's just 500 metres after the landmark Replay condominiums.

Take the track down to the left, leave your vehicle in the spacious parking area and head towards the cute red Japanese-style footbridge. And it's at the moment you cross over this that you find yourself in a wonderful world that's part Samui's natural tropical beauty and part the artistic creation of Orgasmic's chef, Walter (Wally) Andreini.

As you arrive, you'll be welcomed by Restaurant Manager, Pascal, himself a chef who's run several of his own eateries (in Cannes and St. Tropez). And with his experience and dedication to making every dining experience an excellent one, you're in very good hands!

Just over the bridge and to the left, there's a cozy open-sided beach bar and lounge. And it's here that you can kick back and enjoy a fine selection of tapas, cocktails, shooters, draft beers and wines in the evenings, and it's also the place to start off if you're there for lunch. Orgasmic opens at midday and makes a great place to spend a lazy afternoon (free use of sun-beds, with towels provided) whilst grazing on a wide selection of light meals, ice-cold beer, fresh fruit juices and delicious pizzas.

And everywhere you look, the scene is lovely. There's the panoramic vista of the ocean and rocky headland to the left, a huge old tree bedecked with numerous varieties of orchids straight ahead next to a fish pond, and a classic Thai pavilion to the right, which serves as the interior 40-seat section of the restaurant.

Choose to sit inside the pavilion, along the beach under the swaying palms and amongst the colourful tropical flowers, or in the individual private sala located along the beachfront. Wherever you decide to wine and dine, you'll still be totally immersed in this authentic Samui atmosphere

So now we come back to Chef Wally and he really has become something of an enigma on the Samui dining scene. He's one of the breed of international chefs who've had formal training plus many years of experience in leading restaurants around the world and is forever taking things to new heights. Constantly picking up innovative ideas and ancient culinary secrets on his many travels, Wally doesn't rest on his laurels as, for him, the quest for perfection is never-ending.

After arriving on Samui in 2004, he led the kitchens in both Captain Kirk (twice) and Zazen Restaurant before deciding in January 2010 that the time was right to follow his own culinary path. And thus, 'Orgasmic' was born. (The name, interestingly, came about when Wally was cooking for a fellow chef and his wife several years ago. She tasted his Scottish salmon and exclaimed – "Orgasmic!" And that seemed a highly appropriate name for Wally's cuisine, in general, and restaurant, in particular.)

"....and Wally's seafood is also highly recommendable."

As you'd expect after all this build-up, the food is pretty special too. Wally's put together an interesting menu of 'East-meets-West' cuisine. For cold starters, both the Duck Carpaccio with Aquitaine hazelnut oil, kalamata olive chutney and foie gras shavings, and the Red Tuna Tartar are delicious and definitely worth trying. Or if you prefer a hot appetiser, the Lobster Croquette will certainly satisfy your taste-buds, however discerning! In fact, all of Orgasmic's seafood is a delicious, with most of it arriving via the local fishing boats that stop-off at the restaurant every morning with the night's catch.

So, onto the main course menu and do try either the Phuket Lobster or the Australian Grain-fed Beef Tenderloin, as when it comes to imported foods, Wally only uses the very best. And that includes the both the Scottish and Orgasmic Salmon, oven-baked in macadamia herb crust with goat's cheese, dill, quinoa, spring vegetables and Vera Cruz sauce.

Of course, you can have a light dessert, such as the lovely Sabayon or the Warm Apple Tart, Belgium-style, but you could also carry on with the orgasmic theme and try the Orgasmic Chocolate comprising a volcano fondant, chocolate mousse, violet ganache, Tonka bean ice-cream, cocoa croquant and a drizzle of vincotto originale.

With its idyllic location, excellent cuisine, great wines (starting at just 960 baht a bottle – even the Champagne Lombard is only 2,750 baht!) and friendly service, it really is orgasmic here and that's always a happy experience!

Orgasmic Bar & Beach Restaurant is open from 3:00 pm,
with the kitchen closing at 10:30 pm.
